Astro adalah robot berbentuk anak laki-laki yang memiliki kekuatan super dan sistem kecerdasan buatan yang tak tertandingi dengan robot manapun. Penciptanya, Dr. Tenma, menciptakannya untuk menggantikan almarhum anaknya, Tovio. Dr. Tenma segera menghancurkan laboratoriumnya, setelah penciptaan Astro, dan mematikan Astro. Setelah itu, Dr. O’Shay, kepala Kementerian Ilmu Pengetahuan menghidupkan Astro, dan mencoba memberinya kehidupan normal sebagai siswa kelas 6 yang membantu agen kepolisian menjaga robot pemberontak dan membuat manusia menjadi tidak berbahaya. Astro menghadapi rasisme ekstrim karena menjadi robot, dan dia harus menemukan kebenaran tentang penciptanya Dr. Tenma.
