Arita Haruyuki adalah anak SMP yang sering diganggu oleh teman sekelasnya. Karena penampilan dia yang gendut dan lemah. Karena itu, dia lebih menyukai dunia virtual daripada dunia nyata. Lalu Haruyuki bertemu dengan Kuroyuki Hime, seorang gadis yang populer dan cantil di SMPnya. Hime memberikan sebuah game virtual bernama Brain Burst yang membuat pemilik gamenya dapat berakselerasi sehingga dunia nyata tampak berhenti ke dalam dunia yang bernama Accel World. Namun ternyata Brain Burst itu adalah game fighting, dimana semua pemiliknya bertarung satu sama lain agar tidak kehilangan kemampuan menuju ke Accel World.
